DE LA SOUL
p>OPENING ACTS: ALI SHAHEED MUHAMMAD with THE EXTREMITIES

Clever and joyfilled, soulful and jazz inspired, this is what legends are made of.

De La Soul - To get a scope of De La's influence on hip-hop is near impossible by now. Forming in 1987, these three MC's (Posdnous, Trugoy and Pasemaster Mase) have been a constant form of inspiration, and a magnificent template of artistic openness for the past two decades. Their debut album, 3 Ft. High and Rising, is not only a bona fide hip-hop classic, it is considered by many critics one of the finest albums ever put to wax. Along with legendary producer Prince Paul, De La Soul left a high watermark for eclectic sampling (particularly jazz) and thought provoking hip-hop. This, of course, was just the beginning. Since then, De La Soul have maintained their artistic integrity, with thoughtful concepts and graceful evolution: from self-reflexivity to roller skating jams. In a genre that tends more towards predictable chart toppers and commercial culture these days, De La Soul's energy is as vital as ever.

Ali Shaheed Muhammad - Ali rose from local neighborhood deejay to a world-renowned producer and musician, forming not one but two popular bands. The first group, A Tribe Called Quest, laid "Mr. Muhammad" partnered up with band mates Q-Tip and Phife to record incontestable hip-hop classics. Their innovation changed the sound of hip-hop and R&B with jazzy, melodic beats. After Tribe, Ali co-founded a new super trio named Lucy Pearl. Here he fused funk, rock, R&B and hip-hop bringing a new energy and sound which remains to be duplicated.

The Extremities - This Halifax DJ-duo's fresh blend of killer hip hop and sizzling jazz samples is astounding hip hip and jazz audiences alike. The Extremities, consisting of Fresh Kils and Uncle Fester, shocked and impressed Halifax audiences with their debut album The New Tonic, which used samples from the album TONIC by East Coast jazz giants Doug Riley, Chris Mitchell, Jamie Gatti and Dave Burton. Hitting the Jazz Fest stage for the second time, this untouchable pair may explode and launch into the stratosphere when long time hero and inspiration Ali Shaheed Muhammad joins them on stage before he glides into his own set.
