Blues Summit featuring Joe Murphy, Big Dave McLean & Watermelon Slim

Joe Murphy
JOE MURPHY has been fronting band for many years. Joe plays Blues harp, slide guitar and accordions and squeeze boxes. He's a vocalist too. Joe has played with many legendary blues players such as Otis Rush, Johnny Copeland, John Lee Hooker, Pinetop Perkins, and Johnny Sansone, to name a few. . Locally, Joe has played with just about everybody and when visiting performers come to the Maritimes, Joe and sometimes even some of his band fill in to complete the show.

Big Dave MacLean
A masterful guitarist and top notch harpist, McLean’s raw and gravelly vocals bespeak of a life lived to the fullest, and a career spent performing in and around those countless small towns that dot the Canadian prairies. When it comes to the blues, however, McLean’s heart firmly beats to the ghosts of the delta greats--especially the incomparable Muddy Waters, with whom he toured over two decades ago. Just how important the Mojo Man was to the development of Big Dave can be gleaned in an 11-minute tribute, aptly titled ‘Muddy Waters for President’. Actually written for the dean of Chicago bluesmen, Muddy died before getting around to recording it.

Watermelon Slim
Watermelon Slim and his crack touring band The Workers have garnered 17 Blues Music Award nominations in four years including a record-tying six in both 2007 & 2008. Only the likes of B.B. King, Buddy Guy and Robert Cray have landed six in a year, and Slim is the only blues artist in history with twelve in two consecutive years. In Spring 2009 he was the cover story of Blues Revue magazine. Slim has been embraced for his music, performances, backstory and persona. He has appeared on NPR's All Things Considered, The BBC's World Service and has been featured in publications like Harp, Relix, Paste, MOJO, Oklahoma Magazine and Truckers News as well as newspapers like The London Times, Toronto Star, Chicago Sun-Times, The Village Voice, Kansas City Star, Philadelphia Inquirer, and Michelle Shocked's JAMS Magazine.
